St. Ann's Early Years, Nursery and Reception classes
Welcome to Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception)
The Early Years Team are really looking forward to teaching your child and taking them on their first exciting steps of their learning journey, by experiencing new skills and knowledge.
In our experience, some children may get upset at some point, this is normal. We will always comfort your child and find ways to distract them and help them to enjoy their time within the Early Years setting. Each child is unique and if your child really struggles to settle, we will work with the parents / carers to make reasonable adjustments and set up an individual programme to support them.
Please remember, to talk to your child's key worker if you have any matters you wish to discuss.
Starting school support
Starting primary school (Reception) is a huge milestone in your childs life. Here is a link providing support for parents/carers with children who are starting primary school. This website offers useful articles and also fun games to play with your child to help them prepare for starting school.

Learning challenges
We have lots of fun and exciting learning challenges in our Early Years.
These take place both inside the classroom and in the outside environment. When having fun learning and investigation new skills and knowledge, the children may get a little messy at times.
Please find out more about our learning by looking at our curriculum page.
Communication & Language - Wellcomm
What is WellComm?
In Nursery we use WellComm which is a Speech and Language Toolkit for Screening and Intervention in the Early Years. It plays a crucial role in identifying children with potential language difficulties and offers a range of customised intervention activities to help support their language development.
The screening tool uses a unique traffic light system to help practitioners understand the child’s current level of speech and language and to provide a pathway for action, ensuring every child gets the support they need.
⬤ Consider referral to a specialist service for further advice/assessment
⬤ Extra support and intervention required
⬤ No intervention currently required
Parents as partners: What you can do to help at home:
Reading - Read and look at books together, plus sing lots of Nursery Rhymes at home. Play 'I spy...' and listen out for different sounds all around. In Reception reading books matched to your childs phonics knowledge must be read at least four times per week and each read must be recorded in the reading record. Across Early Years, your child will also recieve a "love to read" library book to share with an adult (only Nursery children need to record this in their reading record).
Writing - have fun mark making at home by colouring and drawing pictures. Encourage your child to talk about the marks they have made. Make large anti-clockwise, vertical line and zig zag lines movements, in the air, painting with water on the floor or using their magic finger to make the patterns in flour on a tray. In Reception, children recieve weekly letter formation challenges alongside name writing challenges.
Maths - Sing number rhymes together, such as 5 Little Ducks went swimming one day or 5 speckled Frogs. Count out aloud while clapping or jumping, count everyday objects, look for shapes and numbers in the environment and talk about different times of the day, dinner time, home time bed time etc. In Reception, children receive weekly maths challenges to complete at home.
