St Ann's Art Curriculum

Intent

Art and Design contributes to the development of the whole child emotionally, aesthetically, physically, socially and cognitively. It provides all children with the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively, creatively and develop their understanding of, and respond to the world around them. St. Ann’s C E Primary School offers our children opportunities to become involved in, enjoy and appreciate the visual arts and how it can enrich their personal lives.  They learn the part that art and design plays in their own and others’ lives, in contemporary life and in different times and cultures. Children experience art through a range of media types, developing skills in manipulating these materials to create the desired effect. Their own art is celebrated through display and exhibitions.  The three Christian values of hope for a positive future, respect and perseverance help drive this curriculum.

We want our children to –

  • Persevere with all the challenges that they are presented with in Art. Trying hard to overcome difficulties presented by learning new skills within the art curriculum. To see their work through to the end creating a piece of art work that they are proud of and have took pleasure in creating.

  • To have hope that by applying themselves to the tasks presented in art they will achieve a finished piece of work that reflects both the effort they have put in and the skills that they have learnt.

  • To feel at peace when working within an art lesson. Feeling secure that they are able to express themselves in an environment that allows them to be creative and find pleasure is creating a final piece of art work.

  • To show respect at all times in art. To show respect for their peers celebrating and critiquing work in a constructive manner. To have respect for the equipment that they are working with using it appropriately and sharing well with others. Finally to have respect for themselves, celebrating the work they have created and recognising their achievement.

Implementation

Children are taught one unit of art each term. This is a knowledge-based curriculum, designed with the needs and current skills of our children in mind with each year group having a focus on drawing, painting and 3D art across the year with additional opportunities for art provided through either whole class teaching or through supplementary activities such as Christian celebration cards, World Art Day, Christmas craft days etc. Each unit has a focus piece of artwork allowing children from years 1 to 6 to gain exposure to a range of artwork from different genres as well as a diverse group of artists, architects and designers. Children will explore and develop artistic skills and then within a deep learning day children will create a final piece of artwork incorporating all their learnt knowledge that they will then display alongside their peers and the wider school community.
