St Ann's Computing Curriculum
Impact
Teaching Computing allows us to create future citizens who can use technology fluently and understand the implications of technology in the real world. We want to equip pupils to use computational thinking and creativity that will enable them to become active participants in the digital world. It is important to us that the children understand how to use ever-changing technology to express themselves, as tools for learning and as a means to give hope to for a digital future. Pupils will have the opportunity to investigate different problems from the real world, persevere with solutions and evaluate the solutions from others. Whilst ensuring they understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with online experiences, we want children to develop as respectful, responsible and confident users of technology, aware of measures that can be taken to keep themselves and others safe online.
Implementation
Computing is taught using the NCCE Teach Computing scheme of work. A new computing unit is taught each half term and takes place over a full afternoon for at least 3 weeks. Teachers teach two of the scheme’s lessons per afternoon to allow children to develop a deep understanding and have a substantial amount of lesson time to complete activities. All year groups learn the same strand of Computing at the same time (Digital Literacy, Creating Media, Programming and Data and Information) to allow teachers to easily revisit prior year groups learning if necessary to recap prior learning or build skills. All children have access to their own device to complete their Computing work. Concept maps, paper activities, photographs and screenshots are used to evidence pupil’s learning. ESafety is taught as part of Computing lessons and as part of PSHCE lessons through use of National Online Safety and HeartSmart.
