St Ann's DT Curriculum
Intent
Design and Technology provides our children with an opportunity to tackle problems of a practical nature. The cross curricular nature of Design and Technology offers a setting for the children to apply knowledge from a number of other subjects including art, language, maths and science. Knowledge is developed using simple tools and materials to design and create linked to the project for the term. Children learn independently and in groups, learning to co-operate, plan, design and make and evaluate their work. They learn to make their own decisions with help and encouragement.
The aims of the DT curriculum are to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- Explore creatively ways in which to solve problems/meet the design brief
- Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
Implementation
The children complete at least one unit of DT each term developed from the DT Association. Each unit starts with a hook to engage the children, followed with a review of prior learning and vocabulary understanding so setting the unit in the context of prior knowledge which will be built on. The unit begins with investigating products and how they work / are made and their purpose. Followed by, setting their design and make task in context, some direct taught DT skills and the development of plans/ designs. Finally the children have a Deep Learning Day in which they make and evaluate their product and review what they have learnt in the unit.
